I completed my MLS at the University of Maryland in December 2004. Before that, I worked for 12+ years in niche magazine publishing as a writer, editor and publisher focusing on the global commercial communications satellite industry. Here are some of the information and library skills I have a background in:
Research, Oral Histories, Interviewing, and Surveys: Wrote “The Future of Cataloging: A Survey of Trends and Issues,” the findings of a survey of 16 professional catalogers, and “Streaming in Digital Libraries: A Survey of Current Trends and Applications,” based on a survey of nine digital library developers. Conducted interviews and wrote dozens of articles and surveys for Via Satellite magazine.
Environmental Scan: Served as team leader to design, help write, edit, and create web site for the Environmental Scan project for FLICC/FEDLINK.
Virtual Reference: Includes chat- and e-mail reference. Provided e-mail reference for the Internet Public Library. Created and maintain a virtual reference collection of 200+ sites on many major subject areas.
Database Searching: Includes advanced database searching in Dialog, EBSCO, PubMed, and most major databases and library catalogs. Specialty areas include science, technology, medicine, and biotechnology.
Subject Guides, Guided Research Modules and Bibliographic Instruction: Created subject guide on Digital Video and Guided Research Module on Competitive Intelligence. Designed and conducted bibliographic instruction session for Competitive Intelligence graduate-level seminar.
HTML web design: Created the web site design for the Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven Digital Library for “Creating a Digital Repository” seminar. The digital library, created by a group of students, houses seven XML-encoded poems by Dada artist Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven.
XML: Familiar with XML encoding using the TEI Lite tag set for archival text encoding.
Distance learning: Designed and implemented the technical underpinnings of five continuing-education courses distributed across the nation using WebCT and CD-ROMs with readings, videos, and narrated PowerPoints. Services included video production, web design, CD-ROM production, and end-to-end customer service.
Abstracting, Indexing, and Cataloging: Learned MARC cataloging in graduate school, and provided professional abstracting, indexing and cataloging services using Dublin Core.
E-letters/Editing/Presentations: Provided all of these services as editor and publisher of Via Satellite magazine for 12 years using PowerPoint and MS Word.
Video Theory and Production: Completed all coursework for MA in Radio-Television-Film at the University of Maryland. Made videos in digital video format as graduate assistant at University of Maryland.
